The Anonymous might work for AA, but it's really a bit harder if you're 200kg and spherical...

It is an amusing image. I attended an OA meeting once a long time ago because I couldn't control my eating. When I got there, I was amazed to discover no obese people. A few could have stood to lose twenty or thirty pounds, but most were trim and fit looking. No one spherical in the place. My experience was a very long time ago, back before bulimia was a household word. Perhaps they were all bulimic. But they weren't fat and were easily anonymous.

On the religious aspect, I agree it might work if you believe

I think it depends on what is meant by "right with God." I took it to mean having made peace with one's demons, which is a positive thing and conducive to normal eating habits. You're right, of course, that introducing God can cause problems, as well.
