A Sony Ericsson smartphone will be the first handset to allow content developers to automatically embed information in commonly used applications such as contacts, calendar, messaging or voice. Sony Ericsson's P800 handset will employ Symbian's Magpie content embedding and delivery technology.

A Magpie-enabled calendar application could deliver sport schedules and travel dates that would then be updated to reflect changing information. Symbian says Magpie could aid the introduction of advanced data, provide carriers with another revenue source and enhance the user experience.

"Users do not have the time or patience to do extensive searches for information as they would in a PC-centric wired environment," said Simon Garth, General Manager of Symbian's Cambridge UK office.

Sony Ericsson, one of the handset makers backing Symbian, early announced the Symbian 7.0 OS would power its P800 smartphone.
