I don't understand the Great Depression of the 1890s as well as I do the one of the 1930s. I know what the Smoot-Hawley tariff did. It made it impossible for southern and eastern European countries to sell enough goods to the US in order to generate enough foreign exchange to pay their international debts, and because these borrowers were unable to service outstanding debts, the lenders insisted on repayment, which generated default.

Debt- deflation - default.
