My SAT scores were higher than those of Mr. Bush by a fair margin, so perhaps I should be President. On the other hand, I dropped out of high school, so perhaps not. I don't really think SAT scores show much beyond the ability to take standardized tests, and my estimation of Bush's intelligence is based solely on the frequency with which I cringe while listening to him speak.

In fairness, I would have to say that using the same cringe-based criterion I cannot rate Mr. Gore's intellect any more highly.

The idea that either could be cast as a "man of the people" is ridiculous. The most distressing part of the last election, for me, was not who won it or the manner of its resolution, but the harsh fact that neither man would have been considered an acceptable candidate for dogcatcher if not for political pedigree. I do not like the idea that suitability for public office is determined by heredity, and I do not like the idea that we seem to be developing a political caste.
