Cellular 3G has unveiled what it says is the industry's most power-efficient, high-bit-rate W-CDMA baseband chip.TopHat is capable of providing near-LAN applications on 3G handheld devices using only a fraction of the power consumption compared to chip implementations based on traditional technologies and architecture. In a related issue, Cellular 3G also announced today that it has joined forces with Sasken to introduce the first chip capable of supporting 2MB wireless connections.

"Advanced wireless applications place heavy demands on processors and batteries," said Warren Wilson, senior analyst at Summit Strategies. "Companies like Cellular 3G are advancing the state of the art so that handsets can deliver these applications with a combination of good performance, low heat and good battery life."

Cellular 3G's TopHat is the first to employ full implementation of the 3GPP W-CDMA FDD standard and offers a multi-receiver architecture for better radio performance that enables up to 2Mbps data transfer in both directions with very low power consumption.

"We set out in 1999 with the goal of building the most power-efficient baseband chip available and assembled a team with the expertise in all the necessary competencies to do so," said Menachem Kenan, CEO of Cellular 3G. "In just three years, we're realizing this goal with TopHat, a chip the size of a postage stamp with the power of a main frame - capable of enabling three simultaneous media conference sessions on a single palm device," <<
