re: "who started the pricewar"
price wars are conducted between the companies all the time and there is nothing wrong with that. The goal though should be to gain something rather than loosing.
re: Barrett's intentions.
in reality his intentions does not matter but the result is important
re: It's within both AMD's and Intel's interests to sell out of inventory,</i?
not always true, it is very much subject to what needs to be done to achieve that goal. Have you ever heard about cure that worse than disease
re: Intel was facing stronger competition,
in fact that is also not true. Intel's market segmentation was very strong at the time. The only positive effect of price reduction could have been seen from retail. Since amd was selling all they can make into retail only the effect price reduction was a reduction of revenue from all segments.
re: based on Jerry Sanders' desire
it is surprising that we do forget that minimum market share is needed in order to remain competitive. I do not know if Jerry's number is fair or not but I know that there is a minimum.
re: Barrett being determined to hurt his own share holders is quite out of his character
barrett represent the management of the company and it is irrelevant if he is a nice guy or not if the result is not what is desired by shareholders
