School vouchers: it burns me went proponents use the argument that it will allow poor kids a quality education. The fact is that the typical plan (offering $4k in vouchers) will NOT allow a non-parochial private school to operate, at least not in CA. What will happen is that families that can already afford the $10-20K tuition will get a state hand-out.

I'm not sure about other states, but I do believe that the California economy would be tramatized if all illegal immigrants left. The labor market here could simply not pick up the slack, at least not at the current wages. If wages doubled for these jobs, inflation would go through the roof. I don't know the right answer, but I believe deporting all illegals would be devastating to our economy.

Re: "The pay is being kept artificially low BECAUSE of the illegals."

Which is why we have prevailing wage laws. Keep reminding your Republican friends of that fact when they scream about prevailing wage laws.

The problem of illegals, from your viewpoint, might currently be described as a "lose-lose." The Democrats see these workers as potential voters; and there's no outrage from the Republicans because this wave of workers from south of the border provides businesses of every stripe in every state with a steady source of cheap labor. And, as we know, the GOP always listens very carefully when the chambers of commerce talk.

So, the bottom line is, nothing is going to happen on this front.

And how much are you willing to pay for a head of lettuce or a 5lb sack of spuds? If you think there are enough US citizens willing to suck up all the labor that the "illegals" now perform you are sadly mistaken. How many folks do you know that are even willing to go haul 100lb sprinkler pipes or pick cherries for 10-12 hours a day 6-7 days a week. What would be a fair wage to pay them?
