9:04AM SSB sees risk of bad news from Dell,Sun (SUNW, DELL) by Julie Rannazzisi
Salomon Smith Barney analyst Richard Gardner said recent checks continue to point to continued weakness in U.S. corporate PC and enterprise hardware demand and a seasonal decline in European demand. Salomon expects total PC shipments to decline 3 to 5 percent sequentially in the second quarter. "In this environment, we see risk of downward revisions and/or earnings misses by Dell Computer (DELL) and Sun Microsystems (SUNW)," the analyst told clients. Still, he concluded that second-quarter weakness may present a compelling buying opportunity. Gardner also said that recent meetings with suppliers suggest "softening European clone demand and sluggish corporate notebook demand," adding that most notebook vendors are hopeful the weakness is merely a pause ahead of the Pentium 4 mobile ramp in the second quarter.
