My son wishes to upgrade a HP Pavilion Model 4550 using a 440ZX/100 chip set and currently operating with a 466 celeron cpu. The mb contains no jumpers to alter the cpu speed, which is apparently fixed on a celeron cpu. Can I purchase a 1 ghz celeron or some other cpu and install it on this MB and obtain improved performance?

No, the 440ZX (really a 440BX) works at 3.3v but the CPU requires a lower voltage be provided to the socket, even for the 466MHz(can't remember what). The 1GHz Celeron will fry in that socket because it's from a later fab process than the 466MHz. I think the highest you can go is 566MHz, hardly worth the trouble.

TBF - You might try Evergreen Technology -

evertech.com

They sell upgrade modules for Intel and AMD processors which often take care of the different voltages required by the new upgrade processor. This would allow a lower voltage Celeron or Pentium 3 to work in an older socket - or slot - depending upon your current system.
Check them out.
