Excellent story, Karen, and mostly true, as far as it goes. The terms of Coach McClain's new package are generous and creative enough to make an NFL salary cap guru blush.

AD, Lee Moon, does all kinds of unusual things to bring money into the school's athletic programs. Most of these are positive, but more than one Cowboy vet wonders about his practice of scheduling away games at the start of the football season against southern and midwestern powers. Tough for a team to get going after getting stomped a couple of times on national TV.

Probably no one was more happy than McClain at the record turnout for the season-ending Utah game. I doubt, though, that any of the 16K+ in the building were any less happy with the event. I listened to the game on the internet with another old Cowboy who was visiting from Jackson Hole. We made enough noise to scare the dogs.

Wyo IS the ultimate stepping stone for coaches - especially, football coaches. Long before Erickson, Tiller and Dimel departed for "greener pastures", there was Wyatt to Tennessee, someone I forget to Indiana, Devaney to Nebraska, Eaton to obscurity (early PCness victim), Akers to Texas and Dye to Auburn. It does get old.

Then again, a few years in Laramie's kind of like a hitch in the Marine Corps. The Few, The Proud, The Cowboys! Not for everyone.

McClain will almost certainly move on in a few years (if not sooner) - if not, you can pencil Wyoming into the Sweet Sixteen for years to come. With more consistent guard play, the Cowboys would have probably prevailed yesterday - and the good news is - the point guard was a true freshman. I suspect he'll improve.

Playing Arizona WAS a big deal but hardly a rare big deal.
During a previous period of ascendency, they were NIT runner-up in 1986, NCAA Sweet Sixteen team in 1987 and first round loser to Loyola Marymont in 1988 (that still bugs me - probably the two most exciting and high-powered teams in the tournament that year and they were seeded eight and nine in the same bracket!). That team was as high as #5 in the polls.

Oh, and by the way, Wyoming even won the whole works once upon a time.

If you see The Lutester, you tell him we'll be looking for him down the road. As for this year - GO 'CATS
