I didn't want a profound understanding of the subject, merely a clue, which I now have, thanks to you.

I can appreciate the close reading folks focusing on the interaction of the words. That's a large part of what makes literature "literature." Personally, I'm not much interested in that, which is why I'm not a high-brow, literature reader. What I can't understand is why they would value that to the exclusion of meaning.
