An excerpt from my Harper's Mag-----
This is in NY at the World Economic Forum, recently-----
The moderator opened the last twenty minutes of discussion to questions from the audience, and senator Patrick Leahy (D , Vermont) rose to make an emotional statement in support of everything that had been said by everybody else. He prefaced his remarks by observing that for the last twenty years no American administration (D, or R) had presented congress with an allocation for foreign aid worth more than 1% of the federal budget, and of that pittance ,two thirds was given to Israel and Egypt, the remaining one third was a subsidy for our own multinational corporations and the totally failed "war on drugs."
" For God's sake." he said, " Let us show some humanity. We're the richest country in the world, and we do nothing,,, Nothing."
