It might be more productive to spend some time wondering how the other side would measure success....see if that does not lead to sobering moments.....

I agree, that's not very objective. How about the absence of any further terrorist attacks for at least 5 years? I'm sure objectives vary depending on one's proximity to the military effort and knowledge of it. Certainly the removal of the Taliban "govt." as a major terrorism sponsor was a major objective. That has been accomplished.
