But yes, that's what I meant - according to our books it could not be isolated by conventional means, known only by its salts, so effectively did not exist as an acid.

Little purple flames, say I :) There was definitely enough agent there to have a damaging effect on wood planking - also on wooden desks, plastic, ethyl alcohol, acetone... of course, I wouldn't vouch for its purity.

I think I lost interest at university when I mentined that I'd try cleaning some stubbornly stained glassware with chromic(VI) acid (perchromic acid, if you wish) and the instructor neither blinked nor winced... all the fun went out of it.
