The carriers themselves look to J.D. Powers comprehensive surveys on customer satisfaction. This from a summary of the results of their “2001 U.S. Wireless Industry Services Study.” The report finds that AT&T Wireless Services Inc. (Kirkland, Wash.) performed particularly well in meeting customer expectations this year. The company ranks highest in overall customer satisfaction in 13 markets. Other providers that perform well include: Verizon Wireless (New York), ranking highest in eight markets; Sprint PCS (Kansas City, Mo.), ranking highest in two markets; and AllTel Corp. (Little Rock, Ark.), ranking highest in two markets. VoiceStream Wireless Corp. (Bellevue, Wash.) received the highest ranking in the Atlanta market. Not really a surprise. AWS & Verizon are the most spectrum rich carriers in the US, and have the best coverage and capacity by far. J. D. Powers surveys are pretty comprehensive, and cover a number of factors but ...In a [the same] J.D. Powers & Associates Survey, 50% of wireless subscribers site customer service and call quality as the top drivers of customer satisfaction . One thing that is interesting is that while AWS is about 95% digital, Verizon is still at least 20% analog and maybe closer to 30%. Their analog coverage however is mostly rural though, so wouldn't reflect to much in the above survey. AWS gave themselves a bad rap when they pioneered digital one rate. It was an immediate success, and they had insufficient capacity to handle it. They recovered pretty darned quickly, converting lots of analog to IS-136, developing untapped spectrum, and supplementing capacity. Back to anecdotes. If anyone riding the AMTRAK from DC to NYC and sees someone staring at their handset because they dropped a call, they are likely to be PCS or Cingular customers. Same if they are taking the same parallel trip by auto on I-95. AWS customers all have smiles on their faces but the real happy ones are Verizon customers (it's an AMPS thing - still a lot of in and out of AMPS on that journey - and its a capacity thing when your in and around DC, Baltimore, Phillie, or NYC, in peak periods). PCS is better than it was, but still lacking the 2 C's. Cingular not real prevalent in lots of this stretch of the Northeast corridor. << 3) Verizon, Good voice quality, good Coverage and so so service. >> I've been a BAM (now Verizon) customer for 17 years wireline (residential & business), and 10 years wireless. I rate their service exceptional, with the single exception of support for wireless data (fair), but they're getting better at that, and I'll give them a bye for now. Again on the wireless side, my headquarters techs rate AWS excellent, Verizon & VoiceStream good, and PCS fair. - Eric -
