Churchill summed up the importance of this battle exceedingly well when he said "Admiral Jellicoe was the only man on either side who could have lost the War in and afternoon."

Churchill was also part of the problem of course.

i don't think the british empire crumbled because of a few military blunders. i think it failed because of problems with the culture. most empires falter because of breakdowns in the culture, not pure economics. free trade is merely a symptom of a breakdown in the culture, and that cultural breakdown is the larger point.

let's look at a recent example--japan. like many other superpowers, in the late 80's everyone thought the japanese were unstoppable. do you know why they are faltering today? it's not just because of a stock bubble. that is surely part of the reason, but in truth stock bubbles are actually symptoms of a cultural breakdown.

now japan is the oldest nation on earth. why? because their culture broke down. japan was the first modern nation to legalize abortion in 1948. half of all japanese women are still single by age thirty. they are more interested in careers than having babies.

this is the downfall of japan, and this selfishness that puts the individual above the family will be our downfall as well.

recognizing one has a problem is the first step to recovery. is america going to waste a couple decades like japan has before we arrive at the same conclusion?
