The fundamentalists are sure making hay with the fact that we have military forces in their holy land.

I don't know how much of a non-starter Iraqi oil is. I know there's lots of oil there and the country is not completely prospected.

The larger end might be to have a secure military resource for force-projection in a troubled area, and also maybe to provide a showcase "democratic" regime for the consideration of the Muslim masses, who are now being asked to choose between corrupt national monarchies and the pan-Muslim Caliphate fantasy. And then there is the fact that the US would be in a much stronger position to influence oil production and policy.

These are just thoughts, an imagined scenario. And they're not even mine, they're my husband's. What do I know?

Edit: btw, there are real basing problems developing for the US in the Persian Gulf area. The huge facility at Diego Garcia is under a shadow. The British Supreme Court has ruled that the expulsion of the native population was illegal. And of course our ships aren't really welcome in certain ports.
