Globe says Hurricane storms north on takeover rumour

Mon 18 Mar 2002

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Hurricane
Hydrocarbons strongly denied another takeover rumour Friday, after a United
States magazine report on the subject sent the Calgary-based oil company's
stock sharply higher and prompted two stock exchanges to halt trading. The
Globe's David Parkinson writes that Both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the
Toronto Stock Exchange halted Hurricane's stock and asked the company to
issue a statement, after BusinessWeek, citing "investors who are close to
the company," reported that "a major oil company" is preparing a $20 (U.S.)
a share bid for Hurricane. The story was picked up by Dow Jones News
Service, sending Hurricane's stock surging at the Nasdaq opening. Hurricane
issued a brief statement saying it "is unaware of any corporate
developments" that would explain the stock rise, but that did not dissuade
investors' enthusiasm when trading resumed. The company's shares rose $2.19
(Canadian) to $20.24 (Canadian) on the TSE. On Nasdaq the stock gained
$1.38 (U.S.) to $12.79 (U.S.). On Friday, spokesperson Ihor Wasylkiw
categorically denied the rumour. "The bottom line is, there's nothing going
on," said Mr. Wasylkiw.
