speaking of things old - there have been
numerous articles recently in the local
print media regarding the haida native
land claims in british columbia.

one such article appeared in this weekend's
paper which i dearly would like to post for
you to read (i'm in touch with the columnist
asking if he would email it to me), but from
that article, are things like this:

"one thing is certain, the haida are unique.
that uniqueness begins with their language itself,
for as anthropologist margaret blackman points
out, the haida speak a language that has no
demonstrable genetic relationship with any other.

whatever their origins in more conventional terms,
it need only be said that the haida have continuously
occupied their territory on the queen charlotte
islands, dall island and the south end of prince
of wales island in alaska since before europe
existed as a concept"

i think they are separate from the aboriginal
north american - maybe inuit.

in the scant 228 years since the white man's "discovery"
of the islands devastation has, of course, been wrought.

i can get real upset thinking about this one.
