I agree completely. Trade is a better way to develop third world economies then aid. Also aid costs us money, while trade benefits both parties. But enlightened self-interest is not just about generosity; it's also about self-restraint. We need to find a way to ratify the Kyoto climate change treaty. It's not only the right thing to do, but it would also send a hugely positive signal to the world — that America understands that if it's going to have lasting allies in a global war on terrorism, it has to be the best global citizen it can be. The attitude that we are entitled to consume 25 percent of the world's energy, while we're only 4 percent of the world's population, is obnoxious. Selfishness and hubris are a terrible combination. I disagree. I don't think its the right thing to do. I don't think it would have positive direct consequences for the US or for the rest of the world. It might have a minor indirect benefit of causing some countries to have a better opinion of the US, but I think that any such effect will be minor. Also I'm not sure the flip-floping around on matters of policy helps the reputation of the US much. As for 25 % of the world's energy, well we produce 20% of the worlds GDP so that's not to far off. I find nothing obnoxious about it. We have not seized the energy by force we produce a lot of it (a lot more then 4%, probably more like 12 to 15%), and then pay good money for what we do import. Tim
