Can a phone not do data and still be 1X? ========== Nokia thinks so. <g> The handset will afford 1x network capacity gains - but with no 1x data capability... Sounds rather silly, doesn't it? Nokia advocates will try to compare it to some Sprint 1x handsets where Sprint consciously had data capability turned off (they don't have 1x network running yet). Don't let them snow you.

1x is a coding standard that improves the bit rate of the CDMa air interface. It does not imply a data capability, any more than the old IS-95a did. but you can use the 1x data stream to send packet data if you wanted. You also can send packet data using the old IS-95a interface if you wanted. This is what VZ and PCS have been offering for the last 2 years. 1x data is using one or more 1x voice channels to send and recevie data. If you combine them into a cinagle channel, then you cna get teh 155 and 307k bps channel rates people are talking about. The major advatnage of 1x is to raise the bit rate that goes out over the air and allow more users to send voice data over teh singel air interface.
