In my admittedly cursory observation over the past few years, high beta stuff like the Q's and to the lesser degree AMAT tend to severely under-perform the QQQ (or $NDX before QQQ was coined in '99) both at the beginning of a down trend and at the tail end of it. There is even a similar reltation between $NDX/$Compx and $INDU/$SPX, but only on a much larger time scale.
