Metro PCS has them right now. I went to the Metro store to buy one last week but they aren't offering Internet applications yet. Maybe they do and the store reps are too stupid to know. No joke, this company needs to work on it's image.

<< When did the 2235 reach the market? This summer? >>

Verizon announced it January 28. It has been in stores here for about a month.

Meantime ... stay tuned for "Thera":

re: 1xRTT "Thera" Pocket PC

No analog?

Not eligible for Verizon's national single rate plans?

(We'll have to see on that one. Verizon's knocking out AMPS pretty quickly, but I was on it/off it regularly this morning.)

Microsoft today unveiled Thera, a PocketPC 2002 PDA/phone for the US market which is due to start shipping from the middle of the year. First out of the traps with the device, which is aimed initially at business customers and will cost approximately $800, will be Verizon Wireless, with Sprint following.

Thera is a 5in by 3in unit with CDMA 2000 1X voice and data communications, uses a 206MHz StrongARM processor, and is built for Audiovox by Toshiba Mobile Communications. For voice it will operate in dual band, on CDMA 800MHz and 1900MHz. Data speeds of 40-60kbit/s are claimed for it.

According to Juha Christensen, vice president of mobility at Microsoft and formerly of the Other Company we don't mention, "Thera is an example of the innovation that's possible with the Pocket PC software. Powerful functionality that comes standard on every Pocket PC like web browsing, instant messaging, and E-mail, are made more compelling by the integration of wireless."

And there we were thinking it was just a PocketPC device with a phone built into it.

Which, now you mention it, seems to be pretty much what Juha just said.

But why is it called Thera? According to Microsoft, Thera is "a word that means opening or gateway in Greek."

Indeedy.

But according to The Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology, it is a:

"Volcanic Aegean island which erupted disastrously during the time of the Minoan civilization of Crete. Once the volcano had been purged of its molten core, the hollow cone collapsed. The sea rushed in, rebounded when it hit bottom and then recoiled in a tidal wave that impacted the coastal settlements of Crete. This may account for the legend of Atlantis sinking beneath the sea."

Molten core? Best wear mittens just to be sure, Verizon customers. ® <<
