castigating someone publicly is not my approach of choice.

I so agree, Karen! If a child misbehaves in the classroom or in public, the best way to change behavior is to try the "step into my office" approach. Private reprimands are much easier to deal with...the child isn't embarrassed and there isn't a chance for anyone to take sides. If it all works out, no one ever knows the details.

Adults need the same consideration. Public discussions over their behavior become everyone's business. When couples bring their private business into the family or party, it makes everyone else uncomfortable. One on one discussions can usually be solved much more easily.

This particular example of "public castigation" started with you repeatedly asking what it was that warranted an apology.

Yep. If X was really interested in an apology, SHE would have answered. She'd rather be a victim. I got a PM from another member of the VRWC last night linking me to X's new and improved profile. You ought to check it out.

Once I figured out that X wasn't going to answer your question, I did, in an even and constructive tone.

Really? You speak for X? Are you on retainer?

I suggest it would be appropriate for X to answer the question herself since she made the request for an apology. That way there won't be any misunderstandings.
That's my point. No federal case involved.
