The one thing that has always left me confused is why the civilized world gives in to terror tactics with arafat yet goes all out to combat terrorism everywhere else in the world. Arafat has made himself into a walking Palestinian flag and gotten the other Arabs to declare him irreplaceable even though they hate and mistrust him. So being against Arafat is being against Palestine. The world supports Palestine, particularly the European Left. They supported Israel until about 1967, but now support the Palestinians, for several reasons. First, the Israelis stopped being the underdog. David became Goliath. The Left likes supporting underdogs. Second, to add insult to injury, the Israelis stopped being socialists as well about that time. Third, most people don't bother with learning historical facts, so they've swallowed the Palestinian rewrite of history, lock, stock and barrel. This version omits the fact that the Arabs started and lost four wars in their attempts to destroy Israel. Fourth, the Palestians got good at PR, and switched their campaign slogan from "Destroy Israel" to "self-determination for the Palestinian people". Goes over much better in the West. In Arabic, the campaign kept the original slogan, but nobody noticed except the Israelis. Fifth, the moral double standard -- the Jews gave morality to the Western World, so Israel is expected to conduct its affairs in a totally pure way (unlike any other country), no matter the circumstances. Sixth, worn-out Marxism, which justifies any tactics for the underdog and the "oppressed". So the Palestinians get a free pass on terrorism. Seventh, the moral double standard again -- no one really expects civilized conduct from Arab regimes. When Hafez al Assad killed 20,000 people in Hama in 1982 to put down a rebellion, who was outraged? Eighth, lots of people still hate Jews, and anti-Zionism gives them a wonderful cover. The Holocaust was so awful that it made Jew-hatred unfashionable for a time, but it was a long time ago now and things have reverted to normal.
