Sprint, Audiovox, Microsoft and Sierra Wireless Developing New Third Generation Sprint PCS Phone That Integrates Pocket PC With CDMA2000 Wireless Voice and Data Capabilities
Jump to first matched term

KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS), Audiovox Communications Corporation (ACC), a subsidiary of Audiovox Corporation (Nasdaq: VOXX) and a U.S. sales leader in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) handsets (according to Dataquest), along with Microsoft Corp. and Sierra Wireless, announced that the companies are jointly developing the newest Windows Powered Pocket PC Thera(TM), an integrated third generation voice and data wireless device which will operate on Sprint's nationwide PCS wireless network.

Thera (a word that means opening or gateway in Greek) opens a new door in mobile communications and computing by providing fully-integrated CDMA2000 3G1X wireless voice and data communications capabilities in a single, compact, Pocket PC device about the size of a 3" X 5" file card. Sprint, which operates the largest all-digital, all-PCS nationwide network and is the fastest growing wireless carrier in the U.S, will distribute and market this new wireless Pocket PC starting later this summer in conjunction with the nationwide launch of its Third Generation Network in mid-2002. As a 3G- enabled device, Thera will allow data speeds up to ten times faster than current 2G devices.

Thera will combine the ease of use and comprehensive functionality of Microsoft(R) Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002 software for versatile and powerful mobile computing applications. It will use Sierra Wireless' new SB555 Embedded Module and Watcher modem management software to enable wireless phone calls, Internet and e-mail access anywhere on Sprint's nationwide 3G network. The unit will be manufactured for Audiovox by Toshiba Mobile Communications Company.

Maximizing Wireless Voice & Data in a Pocket PC Format

For Sprint customers, 3G1X services are planned to launch nationwide in mid-year 2002. Once launched, Sprint expects faster wireless data speeds and enhancements for existing applications when using 3G-enabled devices. When used on Sprint's Third Generation Network, Thera will provide mobile data transmission speeds of up to 144 Kbps, with average speeds of 50 to 70 Kbps, supporting higher speed wireless connectivity for Web browsing, e-mail with attachments, enhanced messaging and games, as well as mobile e-commerce functions.

"With the nationwide launch of Sprint's Third Generation Network drawing near, we are excited to offer a fully integrated wireless computing and communications device that will dramatically enrich the overall wireless experience by bringing mobility and clarity to capabilities once limited mainly to the home or office," said Charles E. Levine, president, Sprint's PCS division. "This new wireless Pocket PC will not only offer the clarity of our all-digital network for voice, it will provide a user-friendly and powerful productivity tool for customers that want to carry one device and stay connected to the people and the information they need while mobile." Thera is powered by Microsoft(R) Windows Pocket PC 2002 software, running on an Intel(R) Strong ARM(TM) 206MHz processor.

Thera comes equipped with all of the rich Pocket PC features and functionality including: Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer, Pocket Outlook, Pocket Excel, Pocket Word, MSN Messenger, Microsoft Reader and Windows(R) Media(TM) Player.

"Microsoft is committed to enabling customers to access their information anytime, anywhere and we're thrilled to work with Sprint to make this reality by bringing Windows Powered Pocket PCs to its CDMA2000 3G1X nationwide network," said Juha Christensen, vice president for Mobility at Microsoft Corp. "Thera makes Pocket PC 2002 software even more compelling with the integration of wireless by enabling live web browsing, instant messaging and e-mail while on the go."

The unit's wireless phone and Internet access capabilities will be enabled by Sierra Wireless' new SB555 high-speed Embedded CDMA2000 1X Module and Watcher modem management software. Thera represents the first consumer application for the ultra-compact SB555, which supports dual-band CDMA frequencies, high-speed packet data and voice communications. Sierra Wireless' Watcher software allows the user to easily configure, control, and monitor the Sierra Wireless modem, making Thera operate as a state-of-the-art wireless handset.

Thera will measure just 3.05" wide by 5.02" long by 7.7" inches thick and weighs only 7 ounces. It will feature 32 MB of SDRAM and 32 MB of Flash ROM and be equipped with an SD card slot and infrared port, among other features.

Lights, Camera, Action -- Sony Brings a Larger Screen to New VAIO Notebook PC

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002--

Mobile Pentium 4 Notebook PC Yields Desktop Power and the Viewable
Screen Size of a 17-inch CRT in one Portable Package
In another first, Sony is proving that you don't need to monopolize an entire desk to obtain the benefit of a desktop PC.

All the muscle needed to run the most intense business, gaming or video applications and larger-than-life, high-resolution graphics are available to go in the company's newest VAIO(R) notebook PC.

The GRX model is literally the biggest thing ever to come out of VAIO notebooks. It's the first notebook PC ever with an available 16.1-inch UXGA TFT display and the first VAIO PC to house the Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor - M. And with its multitude of connection options, advanced graphics and DVD capabilities, the GRX PC was designed for both work and play.

"We're talking extreme entertainment value here," said Mark Hanson, vice president and general manager for VAIO PC marketing at Sony Electronics. "Imagine watching movies or even editing your own home movies or business presentations on a giant screen TV. The GRX notebook provides a similar type experience -- total immersion."

The built-in display offers a viewing area similar to a standard 17-inch CRT monitor in a flat, space-saving panel. The 1600x1200 pixel resolution yields 144 percent more viewing space than an XGA (1024x768) LCD display. Movies played on the GRX model's DVD drive captivate the viewer with vibrant color and rich texture. And the integrated box speaker system adds one more dimension to the stunning PC theater experience.

Combining Desktop Substance with Notebook Style

All GRX models come with massive hard drives and a CD-RW/DVD combo drive in a hot swappable multi-bay that can alternatively accommodate an extra battery for up to four hours of unplugged operation. The new series also offers two PC card slots that can house the VAIO wireless LAN card for high-speed wireless access to the Internet or other PCs, a Memory Stick(R) media slot for exchanging pictures, music, data and videos and an i.LINK(R) (IEEE 1394) digital interface for swift sharing of files between compatible digital appliances. Each GRX model comes with Sony's exclusive personal video digital editing software package that allows home movie enthusiasts and multimedia designers to take control of their media and wring maximum performance from their system.

To ensure the highest clarity for business presentations or the latest graphics-intensive gaming software, each model is outfitted with the latest high-speed graphic chipset, for top quality 3D detail and responsiveness.

All of this is packed into a slick, thin-profile casing, with a stainless steel keyboard mechanism that strikes the just the right pitch for comfortable, quick typing. For all its might, the new notebook is surprisingly portable at 8 to 8.6 pounds.

Big Power and Memory for a Better Bottom Line

The VAIO GRX PC will be available later this month in three retail configurations and a number of build-to-order options for business buyers. All three retail models, the GRX590 GRX570 and GRX550, come standard with 512 MB of DDR RAM. The GRX590 model, with a 40 GB hard drive, is bundled with a wireless LAN PC card and will cost about $3,000. The GRX570 model also sports a 40 GB hard drive and will be available for approximately $2,500. The GRX550 model, with a 30 GB hard drive and a 15-inch XGA TFT display, will be available for about $2,100. All retail models are fully loaded with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition.
