Yes very sobering. The idea that an incipient genocide has clear and recognizable signs is worthwhile considering. My own reaction to the Talib destruction of the Afghan Buddha's is most instructive to me. I knew in a semi-conscious sort of way that there was real bad juju brewing but didn't pay much attention due to the "foreigness" of it all. Then - whammmo, one fine fall morning I'm watching people jump out of the world trade center.
