Experts tell parents to let kids watch lots of TV

Researchers in Germany say parents should encourage their children to watch lots of TV.

They say watching TV helps children become well-adjusted adults.

Other experts are warning parents to control the amount of TV they let their children watch.

The team from the University of Siegen says children use TV in a number of positive ways, claiming it helps them relax and have fun, take part in group conversations and it gives them the chance to identify with people and find role models.

"Good parents should not turn off the television but encourage their children to sit in front of the box to help them develop," media researcher Professor Hans Dieter Erlinger told Focus magazine.

"If children are to grow up into competent adults then they have to watch television," he said.

His colleague Dirk Ulf Stoelzel warned parents about the dangers of switching the TV off. "I think it's dangerous to bring children up without television. TV is part of social reality," he said.

He also says claimed children get useful tips about growing up from television programmes and use it as a valuable source of information.

But Communications researcher Ingrid Paus- Haase says parents should be careful about the amount of TV their children watch.

She said: "Parents have to teach kids how to watch TV sensibly. Just as they show their children how to ride a bike they should show them how to watch TV. Parents should choose programmes of interest and turn the TV off as soon as the show is finished."
