I've asked you this before: What would you have me do?
I have nothing to add to what I've already told you. I wouldn't have you do anything. Just like society at large, there are some behaviors that are amenable to standards and criteria. They can be codified into rules that are enforced by the thread-head.

There are other things that people just have to manage by themselves through individual or consensus actions. In that realm, the thread-head is just a citizen like everyone else. Citizens work out for themselves the protocols of borrowing a cup of sugar or the lawn mower. There are no rules but basic civility and human decency. The enforcement is peer pressure and conscience. There is no penalty for acting inappropriately save to one's reputation.

This reminds me a bit of what Dithers was saying about when he and I were kids and how we "just played." Much of the process of "just playing" is figuring out in real time what would be codified into rules and handed down to the next generation of kids on the block and what was just social interaction. It was an ongoing process. Maybe that's why I stubbornly continue to participate here--reliving my childhood. <g>

I'm sorry that I triggered a discussion that spiraled out of control. I will be more careful in the future.

Karen

The original intent in setting up this thread was that it should be fair to both sides....A board of a couple of liberals and a couple of conservatives could decide the matter.

I just finished reading the overnight postings on Beanies <shudder> and I do have a suggestion after all. I noticed that both "sides" on Beanies were trying to pawn me off on the other side, with no success. <g> As a hybrid (or hermaphrodite, if you prefer), who has never joined in the gang activities, maybe it's easy for me to say, but perhaps it would be helpful to play down the political affiliation stuff. Can't we all be just individuals? If, for example, a board needs to be established, can't it comprise some of the more respected or more prolific posters or a random selection from the regulars? Why do we need to focus on sides?

Just a thought.
