Karen, I have had the opposite reaction from my own family. They are Democrats...always have been and always will be. Every conversation ends in a bashing of any Republican and the praise of any Dem. They are supporters of any issue put forth by the Democratic platform.

I have always found this to be so ridiculous. How can an individual believe totally in one party and all of its candidates? So when any of my siblings speak, I am already sure of what they will say...and I don't listen.

Many of us do the same thing on SI. We see a post by a member and react to the messenger not the message assuming already what position he/she will take. We give no thought to a possible new idea or opinion offered.

It's a shame that we will never learn anything new if we only listen to those that already agree with us. I do think that you try to be independent.

Marie

hawks are generally associated with the right

That's an assumption most people make, and I wonder why that is. Reagan was called a warmonger from day one, but if you look back, all he did was invade a tiny Caribbean island. Compare that to the tons of bombs Clinton dropped.

Then there is the famous question asked to Colin Powell by Madeline Albright, "What's the point of having this vast, superior military if we aren't going to use it?" Powell wrote in his autobiography that he almost had an aneurysm after she said that.

More examples of lefty hawks - McNamara and LBJ.

Lefties tend to misunderstand the purpose of the military.

mean-spirited, thick-as-a-brick, sanctimonious proles

This one almost got by me. Does being a thick as a brick prole automatically imply mean spiritedness and sanctimony?

Thick as a brick proles are the salt of the earth....
