I do not trust ANY government; I learned my lessons when I lived in Latin America. Funny thing is... American politicians are sounding closer and closer to their Lat Am cousins. I also lived in England and I was simply amazed at the expectations that the public has (the continent included) from their respective governments... to me this Euro-coin is a dream based on peyote, but I am not going to argue as the very fact that they have been capable to put it together speaks volumes about the power of the politicians in Europe. As for the tax that you mention, the INSTANT that ay government gets their fat little fingers on ANY revenue for ANY reason... It will be like the heirs of some rich magnate, arguing politely about the loot that the magnate would leave behind without a will... I see that Robert already address this and I agree with him. Imagine... are you going to tax based on source or need? If it is on source... what percentage applies to what country and if so... corporations would move headquarters accordingly... Besides... the corruption in specific countries would create true conflicts and the opposite effect to a streamed lined flow of commerce would occur. I remember talking to a Chinese exec who worked for a conglomerate owned by the Chinese government and when I asked him how would he resolve the problem of a potential trade embargo by the US. He smiled and said that they owned a number of Maquiladoras in Mexicali (Mexico) and so they would move their product in process there, finished in Mexico and claim, under NAFTA, to be Mexican produced (as the % required would meet the requirement) So much for embargo... I believe that the current fear created by the Sept 11 event has allowed these "world government" ideas to flow with renewed gusto. However... I do not think they will succeed... in any event, for such a government to succeed there would have to be more homogeneity in the manner in which things are handled (i.e. try less corruption in specific areas)... that alone would be an improvement, which I would not mind see... But from there... Take the American stance... Americans are not about to give up an ounce of power (or jurisdiction) in their own territory... it is their ball and they will not let some other Mongo Santa María politician to dictate what happens here... (and the reverse will apply in other countries) Still... you are right, never keep the eyes off the bastards... you never know what's up their sleeve and if the price is right... they may just sell their own mothers to get their agenda going. Look at the current Attorney General... now THAT guy is dangerous and scary... Remeber what Mencken said... (already posted before here) Politicians will invent scary monsters just so the public clamours for their leaders to go and protect them... Just like priests invented hell and demons... it is all about control of people, that is the business that politicians and priests are in (actually, priests are worse as they also want your spirit) -g- The world IRS, in my opinion, is still a few centuries away... we still have some spark in us that will not allow to convert us in robotons... At least I want to think so.
