Once you go through the labors of firing a [fuel] burning kiln, and the roar as loud as a locomotive running through your studio is silenced; only then, during those first few minutes of silence can you appreciate what you have just gone through.

When I think of the various art forms, it seems to me that there isn't really anything comparable to working with a pottery kiln, except for a couple of things.... foundry work to produce bronze sculpture... but then, very few artists are involved in that part of the process... and hot glass, but it tends to be of shorter duration...but there is definitely a great deal of physical excitement involved in that process. One of my friends' daughters has really gotten into hot glass since she went away to arts college... It is exactly that physical aspect of the process that interests her. I always wanted to try working with hot glass, but never had the chance as it wasn't that easy to find a place to study it up here.
BTW, speaking about hot glass, this suddenly came to mind. Do you know about this project? The Bridge of Glass project being created in Tacoma, WA by Dale Chihuly?

If I get out to the coast later this year, I'm hoping to stop and see it if it's finished when I'm there.
