Tony, When Compaq bought DEC, Intel got the DEC fab (Maine?), but Compaq got Alpha. The FTC didn't want Intel to also get Alpha for anticompetitive reasons. In fact, Intel was required to continue fabbing the Alpha for Compaq after they got the fab. So, where was the FTC when Fiorina, Capellas, and Barrett were putting together this deal? Compaq knew that they were going to try and merge with HP when Intel got the Alpha -- that's why Intel got Alpha, because a combined HPQ didn't want Alpha competing with the in-house developed Mckinley. Intel ended up getting everything they wanted in the beginning, and Sanders was left sitting out in the cold with his thumb up his ... Anyway, I think AMD will have the last laugh, and if Dell adopts the Hammer, they may have a few giggles. Pravin.
