Milan:

". I am sure the business decision will be duly made based on just how many dollars of Carly's salary will be subsidized by Intel ;-)"

There's this pervasive notion out there that INTC can buy anything it wants...This notion has been true historically when INTC remained unchallenged on most product fronts...That "landscape" has recently been altered with AMD's revolutionary product, the Athy, which has resulted in increasing market share for AMD and plumetting margins and profits for INTC...INTC no longer has the "reserves" to buy its way out...INTC has used up its $5.0 billion capital gains pool in FY01 attempting to buy p4's acceptance and foist Itanium upon the marketplace...Just ain't a "big" enough reserve left to "buy off" Carly...Besides Carly is looking for price/performance, something Hammer is about to bring to the marketplace "bigtime"...

Milan,

But HWP is acquiring CPQ partly for its x86 server line, (and partly for other assets like Compaq Global Services).

Of course, HP has its own X86 server line, but that product type was started at Compaq. Don't forget storage, Compaq ships more SANs than anyone else.
