combjelly: I don't expect that to delay SuSE from their November introduction. I don't expect any kernel issues, the memory management is regular x86 with a few changes. There likely are some issues with SMP, but they also have some more time for that.

I'd be surprised if things go that smoothly, however I haven't followed any similar launches, so I cannot say what the norm is.

Don't you think there will be a capability to run 32 bit software (especially drivers) under Linux 64?

Only a small subset of drivers will benefit from 64 bit code - IDE driver, video, network - and even in those, performance benefit will not be significant.
