China hasn't been the richest, most powerful nation on Earth probably since the year 900 BC. Opium wasn't the downfall of China, they stagnated and "died" because of their economic and political system 1000 years ago. The Japanese were probably the biggest reason communism came into power there.

I see no real cause and effect there...as Cyberken and Krinsky have helped make the case too, thanks to them. Re: "China was the richest and arguably the most powerful nation on earth. When it was over, it was a nation that could not even feed itself." When it was ending, China had been turning away imports- which might well have fed them, mind you. Dan B
