Extreme gyrations of this nature around a pivot point usually signifies an inflection point. So if the market has made a great advancement, it's indicative of a top. Likewise, if the market dumps tremendously, it usually signifies a bottom.

interesting point, since the Nikkei stockmarket is down 70% over the past 10 years, the extreme volatility could be signaling a longer term bottom. At least by this particular metric.
