Yeah, VDSL, FTTCab, sure. It's about 90% of the work that is required for FTTH, and FTTH equipment is now cheaper for much higher data rate and future expandability.

Check this out: Qwest's VDSL data offering in Phoenix:
256 kbps for $35; 1Mb for $45.

and Qwest's VDSL data offering in Omaha:
3 Mbps for $40.

Hmmm, how come bits are so much cheaper in the corn belt.

Then they offer video (digital TV) for 32-40 bucks a month. Looking at just the bits on the wire, this is about 18Mbps peak, for $32-40 per month. How come the video "bits" are so much cheaper than the data "bits?" Especially considering that about 33% of the cost of a video bit has to be fed back to hollywood/content providers. If you base the costs they charge on the video transport and work backwards, assuming bit costs are linear, they should be providing 1Mbps data service for $1.48 per month!
