You're probably right. The thing is though, they and everyone else had no medicine (as we know it today) and opium was used by just about everyone for everything. You had a headache, take opium, a toothache, take opium, a bad cold, take opium.

I am not unwilling to believe that opium may have played a part in China's problems, but I am not so ready to accept that it was the addiction of several million of their people that caused them to lose whatever leadership they may have had. They resisted the outside world, they isolated themselves.

This was all at the worst possible time for a country to do that. This was at the time when the world was making leaps and bounds industrially and scientifically. It was very bad timing.
