In fact, you are protected by federal law if you are targeted by religion:

"Current legislation allows federal prosecution of a hate crime only if the crime was motivated by race, religion, national origin, or color. In addition, the assailant must intend to prevent the victim from exercising a federally protected right."

There have been several instances recently where law enforcement was charging hate crimes against those attacking Jewish synagogues.

Currently, sexual orientation is not covered by the federal law, but there are laws in 21 states to protect on the basis of sexual orientation.
