Fear not, Grace...I don't! I DO count on medicare (or some wretched replacement thereof), so I hope Congress doesn't shag the pooch TOO egregiously with our fiscal future.

That's a good conservative starting point for retirement planning, but the current SS panic is waaaay overblown. This little idee fixe is, more than anything else, Bill Clinton's creation. Slick Willie fashioned this clever little piece of party politics as a club with which to beat the Republicans. Who can argue with "preserving and protecting" Social Security?

All the panic is over something that might happen 40 years from now. It's an actuarial argument more than anything else. Add a few extra basis points of growth over 40 years and the problem disappears. Who can get excited about that?
