More important then it being indirect is that the relationship is week.

As I said before SUVs only use a relatively small percentage of our total oil use. Factor in what the replacements for the SUVs would use and the percentage gained by dropping SUVs is even less.

Also even if we could cut our need for imported oil by half or even three quarters, perhaps even 100% we would still have reason to intervene against something like Iraq's early 90s invasion of Kuwait. If SUVs and even all gas guzzlers in the US had never existed it would not have prevented that war.
