I hadn't given it a second thought, actually, but I will consider it once raised.

Karen, The group that the Yates followed was far beyond the usual definition of fundamentalist. It is a cult, pure and simple, run by a maniacal kook who has been in trouble with the law on several occasions.

I find nothing wrong with home schooling, and the results of testing, in most cases, shows that home schooling teaches better than the public school system. IMO, Rusty and Andrea, were brainwashed to a certain extent. How else can one explain that Rusty has not shown one ounce of grief about the deaths of his children? All he does is defend his wife, without blaming the cult mechanism for her problems.

Perhaps Andrea was demented, but is that to be considered to be the same as insane? All I know is that five innocent children have dies in a horrible way, and someone should be punished for such an act.

Have you, by any chance, noticed that, with all the prominence of the Yates case, none of the believer-haters hereabouts has made any issue about the fact that Rusty and Andrea and their five kids are, or were, poster children for the fundamentalist Christian lifestyle, home schooling and all? I'm not trying to make an issue of it either, only to point out the conspicuous absence of cheap shots.

I think I remember seeing cheap shots on the topic elsewhere on SI, but I think you are right, I don't remember seeing them on this thread.

Bashing Christians because of Yates, or Muslims because of 9/11 and other terrorist attacks, or environmentalists because of the unibomber, or anti-communists because of McCarthy (who was right about some things and at least unlike the other two didn't kill anyone, but used despicable tactics and messed up innocent people's lives) are all examples of cheap shots. Unfortunately such shots are not uncommon.
