The deterrence is clear in Tim's example. Did you understand his point?

Well, I thought so but perhaps not. It was not entirely the same as my earlier point about kidnapping, but there is a similar thread. The choice is still between killing a witness and escaping punishment vs. not killing the witness and getting caught. I question how much the penalty for getting caught matters in that equation.
