Thanks... you're right, I may be a little touchy about the issue. I care deeply about the goal of "American Energy Security", and I'm old enough to remember vividly the disruptions and stagflation kicked off by the oil shocks of the '70s that played off of our vulnerability.

I also remember the vote in Congress over which pipeline route to choose, and it was a very close thing. Ultimately, the promises of the Oil Companies that an Alaskan route would get the oil to market faster ecked out a narrow victory over the trans-Canada pipeline proponents... even though most environmentalists and economists believed that the route to the midwest was preferable. (Once the oil reached the major pipeline terminus in the midwest, oil could be distributed by the existing pipeline routes throughout large parts of the States... without the risks or expenses of an ocean voyage)

The only reason to put the oil on tankers was to export it... something the Oil Companies lied about before Congress and the Public.

Canada offered a free right-of-way for the pipeline then, and they are offering one again now.

I get a little riled-up when I realize that - a generation later - the same monied interests are at it again... claiming to support national defense ("energy security"), while really only looking to their pockets.

Perhaps we are just "condemed to repeat it <history>" as the famous saying goes....
