The Alaskans are probably anticipating the benefits the added tax revenue will garner for them.

The tax revenues are secondary to the economic activity that will result. I lived on the Bering Peninsula in the '70's, when the oil money was just starting to come in. The jobs were particularly valuable to the Eskimos. I recall going to the home of the richest man on Little Diomede. You could tell he was well off because he had a Coleman stove rather than a stone seal oil lamp.

Thanks to economic activity, largely oil related, that condition is vastly improved. Life for the indigenous folks are no longer as nasty, brutish, and short.
