when you placed SI's atheists in the same category with Jew-haters.

I don't think that was his intention. Perhaps the most aggressively obnoxious atheists where placed in the category with Jew-haters, because they where seen as "people of religious faith - haters", but I don't think he considers all atheists to be full of such hatred or that he said that he considered them to be so.

I got something off of my chest, at that point. Even then, I was vague about which persons might have inspired that feeling. In any event, at this point, I am trying to keep it low key and make sure that it does not get too personal.

I'll get back to you on the proposed line.

Now I will give addressing your attempt to draw a line a try:

Any comment on a belief that implies that those who hold it are dumb, evil, or have emotional problems is an attack on those people. There are few things that should permit one to make such implications. Therefore, I disagree with your first point.

Mere blanket charges against a class of people (atheists, persons of faith, African- Americans, Jews) are rarely permissable, especially when they are questions of fact that can hardly be substantiated, or it is unnecessary to generalize to that extent in order to complain, and especially when they feed into a stereotype that is quite harmful to the class of people. Thus, I would disagree with your second point.

It makes perfectly good sense to complain about the behavior of an interlocutor, or a group of interlocutors, if you find their behavior in discussion objectionable, or they have evidenced attitudes that you find offensive. Sometimes, the insult is gratuitous, but in general, I have to disagree with your third point.

If you look at my discussion of this issue with Karen, you will see what I think more clearly.......
