"Based on preliminary estimate of the vote by HP shareholders and the overwhelming support of Compaq shareholders, we believe that the proposed Compaq-HP merger will be approved," the letter said. "But the HP votes will have to be counted and certified by independent election inspectors before there is an official decision, and that process could take a few weeks. During the past several months, we have seen a groundswell of support from customers and partners who understand the strategic rationale for the merger and agree that the combination of our companies would accelerate our strategy and provide increased value for them. Whatever the outcome, be assured that our commitment to your success is unwavering. As a merged entity or an independent company, we stand ready to deliver the superior value in products, services and solutions that you expect and deserve. Throughout this process, we have continued to focus on our customers, on execution and on identifying the key trends that will shape the future of the industry. We now stand ready to make that future a reality. On behalf of the employees of Compaq, we want to thank you for your loyalty and support." Both Capellas and Jim Milton, Compaq's senior vice president and general manager of North America, signed the letter.
