Appeasement will not lessen it, anymore than Munich prevented WWII.

Yes Nadine... But Munich HAD TO HAPPEN, if one thinks about it. It was the final step to removing all doubt from the minds of the British and French that Hitler was bent upon dominating all of Europe, not just Lebensraum and unifying the German people which might have been displaced by the creation of Czechoslovakia and Poland.

And they required that time in order to rebuild their military forces so that they could fight the grueling war they knew would lie ahead (with visions of the carnage from WWI dancing through their minds).

Nadine.. you're apparently pretty closely attached to this, being Jewish. I'm not Jewish, nor am I Palestinian. I don't have a cultural stake in this, except in how it impacts the United States.

But do you seriously believe that Bush can justify sending American boys to fight and die there if every attempt at achieving peace is not pursued??

I'm under FEW illusions about how successful we'll ultimately be in achieving long-term peace in the region, but it's a process that has to be followed, despite what appears to be self-delusion and folly.

Because if extreme Islam continues to gain the upper hand, we're talking about fighting millions, not just thousands, of extremists. We're talking about having to send US troops to seize the oil fields in order to avert an energy crisis. We're talking about a terrorist bombing using WMDs, not just C-4 or TNT.

It may happen anyway, but the world has not been shaken out of denial yet. They believe all that is necessary is to resolve the issue of a Palestinian state. In fact, they are praying (as I am), that this is all that will be required. Give them a state, give them gobs of economic aid, and maybe they'll finally quit b*tching and realize there's more to life than hating Jews.

But it doesn't prove to be enough, then few will be able to hold Israel to blame for what it will have to do, namely to destroy those Arab states that are seeking to threaten its citizenry, and/or its very existence.

This is what it's going to take, imo. Adding every new radical group to the terrorist list is useless. Depriving those groups of the popular support they require to carry out their attacks is what must be pursued until it's irrefutable that we have to fight, occupy, and redevelop the entire cultural mindset of the entire region as we were forced to do with Japan and Germany.
