Yet there seem to be some who claim to be libertarins who are also leftists.

Libertarians are socially left and fiscally right. Doesn't seem complicated to me, although it does make the categorization messy. Neither side seems to appreciate the distinction, best I can tell. It makes perfect sense to be pro choice on everything, not just abortion (left) or social security (right).

Let's see: libertarian implies minimal state intervention (I thought).
Leftist implies MUCH state intervention.

What's odd is that many of the rightists here also seem to prefer state intervention - they just want to see it in different places.

This is something I've commented on before: when a liberal government is in place, conservatives don the mantle of anti-statism. When a conservative government is in place, liberals do the same. The only conclusion I can reach from this is that both sides are fond of big government - as long as it's their big government.
